Wow, 8 years since that day. Some things are so big that you never forget what you were doing when they happened. September 11 is one of those days. I'll never forget what a perfect day it was in southwest Ohio....bright blue skies, comfortable low 70's temperature, the leaves just beginning to change from green to their beautiful, red, gold, orange, and brown. It was one of those days when you just wanted to be outside. I was driving to a whole house inspection when my cell phone rang, and my (now) husband called and said that a friend had called him that some planes had hit the world trade center buildings. So I flipped on the radio and listened, aghast, as the buildings fell.
I became transfixed with the news, watching it endlessly, scared about what might happen next. I lived about four miles from the airport, and it was really unsettling to lie in bed and not hear planes going over after all flight was suspended. I had read about the muslim extremists in Time and Newsweek and other magazines, but now I learned about them in earnest. I remember one news reporter I greatly admired was Ashley Banfield and how she went to Afghanistan, into the wild, so to speak, and did a wonderful job reporting about what it was like there.
So many things have been said since that time and now there are many who believe that 9/11was the work of our own government to accomplish its own purposes. I hate to say it, but it makes sense. I hate to think that it's true, though because if it is, there's no stopping the government. It will do what it wants to do with all of us with the exception of the Lord's intervention.
I read in the book of Amos this morning about how God would judge the nations that had treated Judah and Israel badly throughout time and how God would judge Judah and Israel for their disobedience. Even though God had determined to judge these countries, he says, through Amos, that it is possible that (Amos 5:15) ....perhaps even yet the Lord God of Heaven's Armies will have mercy on the remnant of his people.")
As the body of Christ, we must be in constant prayer these days that God will be merciful to our country for the way we have turned from Him and his righteousness.
